In the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of humankind.

Introduced by Dr. Matei Ciocarlie, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University

Dr. Matei Ciocarlie works in robotics, with the goal of building intelligent mechanisms that interact with their environment, hold their own in the real world and perform useful tasks. He is particularly interested in versatile robotic manipulators, which combine mechanical and computational intelligence to assist people with motor impairments or to make skilled workers more productive. Ciocarlie earned his BS in engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and his PhD at Columbia University in New York. He is the recipient of the Robotdalen Scientific Award and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award.
