Harlem School of the Arts’ 50th Anniversary Gala Kick-Off

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) hosts its 50th Year Anniversary Gala Kickoff on Monday, October 5th in the Grand Ballroom at The Plaza Hotel. Proceeds from the evening will assist HSA in providing scholarships, funding pre-professional training programs, reaching public school children through its arts-in-education partnerships and renovating the School’s Herb Alpert Center in Harlem. This year’s Gala will recognize artists, community leaders and activists that represent outstanding achievement in arts advocacy, philanthropy and community leadership, including renowned soprano Jessye Norman, who will receive the Dorothy Maynor Award and actress and activist Cicely Tyson, who will be recognized with the Betty Allen Lifetime Achievement Award. Artist Kehinde Wiley, Grammy-winner singer/entertainer Alicia Keys and Keys’ mother Terria Joseph will each be presented with the Visionary Artist Award. The Corporate Award will be presented to Michael Sweeney, CEO of Steinway & Sons (award to be accepted by Chairman, John Paulson) and the Civic Award will be presented to the Honorable Keith L.T. Wright. Legendary jazz musician and bandleader Arturo O’Farrill will perform. as will a number of talented HSA’s talented students.
